Retired Coast Guard Captain, Alan B. Smith, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2022, with his loving family by his side. He was born to Robert and Virginia Smith on March 16, 1936 in Middleborough, MA.
Alan was a loving and devoted husband and father who after graduating Dartmouth in 1958, began his 30 year term with the Coast Guard. He started this career in Alaska with his loving wife Joan by his side and he ended his career in Washington, DC. He was on an ice cutter Bramble on the Great Lakes as well.
In 1976, the family moved to Durham, NH as he took command of the Coast Guard Cutter Decisive out of New Castle, NH. This began his 10 year of unselfishness as he commuted to Boston and Portland, ME where he was Chief of Search and Rescue in the waters from Portland to Boston; enabling his family to stay in Durham and his children to finish out their schooling.
Alan and Joan moved to Kittery, ME in 2005 from Annandale, VA to be closer to their children, grand children, and great grand children. His love of watching NASCAR and professional sports on tv like baseball, football, and hockey, brought him to watch his grandchildren play all of these sports. He also enjoyed spending time at the family cottage during the summer. He was a member of the Propeller Club and volunteered over 3000 hours at Wentworth Douglass Hospital.
Alan made many friends wherever he went and always welcomed you into his home.
Alan is predeceased by both of his parents, a brother, and his loving wife Joan of 62 years. He will always be remembered for his big heart and even bigger infectious smile.
Alan is survived by his daughter Stephanie and husband Bill Tobey, and sons Douglas and Jonathan; grandchildren William Tobey Jr, Alex and wife Erin Tobey, Ryan Tobey and fiancée Aleisha , Hannah, and Christian Smith; his great grandchildren Emma Tobey, Ryder and Macy Tobey, Brentley and Kenna Tobey; his sister in law Barbara Loftus and his nephew Geoffrey and Maura Loftus and niece Carolyn
We would like to thank the entre staff at River Ridge for their extraordinary care and heartfelt compassion that they showed to Alan and Joan. They treated both parents like family.
