Obituary

Allen Bradford Hale had a peaceful passing at home on the evening of July 3, 2023, in the loving company of his wife Ann, and son Robert. Often called "Red", Allen was the son of the late Herman and Phebe (Burrows) Hale.  Born in Portsmouth, NH on November 10, 1934, he grew up on Mount Agamenticus in York.

While at York High School, Allen joined the Naval Reserve. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy where he served aboard a wooden mine sweeper during the Korean War. Following discharge in 1956, he worked 35 years for Public Service of NH, retiring as a control room operator at Newington Station in 1991. A longtime resident of Kittery Point, Allen served as a member of the Kittery Point Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years.

Allen found happiness in the simple things: his family and friends, his home and garden, a good meal, a cold beer, and the outdoors. He enjoyed working with wood - from cutting and splitting firewood, to carving and crafting a wide variety of wooden objects.

With a passion for camping, fishing, and hunting, Allen was a true Maine outdoorsman. Family vacations were spent in the woods of northern and western Maine, and after retirement, he and Ann spent their summers camping and fly-fishing in the Jackman and Rangeley areas. Allen had a deep appreciation for nature. His yard was dotted with bird houses and feeders, his camper calendar was filled with daily wildlife sightings - and his family laughingly called his television program choices: "animals, animals, animals".

Allen will be buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Eliot alongside his parents and son James, who passed away in 1984. At his request, no service will be held. Memorial donations may be sent to Beacon Hospice, with special thanks for their care which allowed Allen to stay at home. (25 New Hampshire Ave, Suite 272, Portsmouth NH  03801; checks should be made out to Amedisys Foundation.)
