Kittery- Arthur "Arty" Louis Bernstein, 79 formerly of Sterling Road in Kittery died on June 24, 2015 at Merrimac Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, MA. Born on July 25, 1935 in Jersey City NJ, he was a son of the late Louis and Catherine (Carolan) Bernstein, brother to the late Dorothy (Bernstein) Roy and husband of over 50 years to Agnes(Hayes) Bernstein who predeceased him in 2013. Arty graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City before entering the United States Army, serving his country during the Korean War. He worked for 36 years at the American National Can Company in Jersey City and Carteret, NJ. In 1988 he and his loving wife Agnes,retired and made their home in Kittery. He also worked for a time at SAMS Club in Seabrook, NH. He was a devoted grandfather who along with his wife, thoroughly enjoyed caring for their granddaughter, Jilliane. Arty was a talented artist, loved dancing and was a familiar fixture walking his beloved Siberian Husky Tonka 3 miles daily for many years. An active member of Parish of the Ascention of The Lord, attending St. Raphael's Church, he was also active in the Knights of Colombus # 1128. He and his wife were also tireless volunteers for the Table of Plenty at St. Raphel's Church. He is survived by his loving daughters Doreen Ravell of Hampton,NH and Carolyn Bernstein of New York City as well as his beloved granddaughter Jilliane Ravell, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 2 PM at St. Raphael's Church. Friends may visit with Arty's family on Monday from 6-8 PM at the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
