Obituary

Kittery- Audrey Elaine (Somes) Linscott, 81, of Dennett Road in Kittery passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 3, 2023 at York Hospital following a period of failing health.

Born in Rochester, New Hampshire on February 14, 1942 she was the last living direct descendant of the Abraham Somes family who founded Somesville, Maine. Her parents Andrew and Mary (Fennerty) Somes raised her on the Cape in Brewster, Massachusetts where she attended Nauset Regional High School and excelled in sports, lettering in basketball there.  Over the years she remained in contact with her Nauset classmates, attending reunions a number of times. At the last years of her high school career her parents moved to Kittery where she attended R.W. Traip Academy, again lettering in basketball and graduating with the class of 1960.

She met her future husband Kenneth W. Linscott during their high school years and later dated, marrying in December of 1962.

Audrey and Ken made their home in Kittery raising their family and being active in their community. She served as a Sunday school teacher at First Congregational Church at Kittery Point for a time and for many years was an active member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, serving a number of roles including church treasurer and youth group leader.

She was a talented musician enjoying the guitar, both acoustic and electric, the piano, clarinet, and saxophone. She enjoyed macrame, both flower and vegetable gardening and stone carving which seemed to bring her closer to her stone carving ancestors who mined the quarries around Somesville, Maine on Mount Desert Island.   She lovingly cared for and meticulously maintained her family homestead in Somesville, where she would often share that it was her " Happy " place, spending many memorable times there alone and with the many family members she enjoyed being with. Family reunions with the Matthews/Somes descendants, her daughters and their families, lobster feeds and cookouts with accompanying custom family t-shirts all brought her tremendous joy.

Unquestionably her first love was her family, active in her girls and their friends' lives growing up, time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter and visiting with friends were all cherished times.

She was a bookkeeper for many years for construction companies and two insurance agencies where she was instrumental in helping them automate their operations by learning and managing the software systems .  Later Audrey started her own bookkeeping business which she called "Chief Bookie" and had several clients including her daughter Wendy's business, Tapley Insurance Agency in York.

Audrey is survived by her loving family; husband Kenneth of Kittery, daughters; Wendy and her husband Brian Tapley of Cape Neddick, Maine and Kristy and Travis Lazenby of Lewisville, NC, grandchildren Savannah and her husband Nicolas Harriman, Joshua Tapley and Zoey Lazenby as well as an adored great granddaughter Natalie and her little brother who is soon to be born.
