Avis Louise
Langley
Feb 15, 1920 — Feb 7, 2023
Avis Louise Langley of Kittery, Maine died on February 7 just a few days before her 103 rd birthday. She was born in Pittsfield Maine in 1920. She spent her early life travelling to the many logging camps in northern Maine and living in a tent with her mother who served as a cook for the camps. Once she reached school age they moved south, and she graduated from Portsmouth High School. After graduation she spent several years running a produce stand on Lafayette Rd in Portsmouth before moving on to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. It was at the Navy Yard that she met her future husband, Leighton Langley. They made their home in Kittery and were married for over 50 years. Later in life she served as the secretary and newsletter editor for the Unitarian Universalist/South Church in Portsmouth, where they were active members. Her regular "2 cents" column in the newsletter that detailed her observations of the ducks, geese, squirrels and other wildlife that she and Leighton regularly fed and observed was a highlight to many church members. In their free time, Leighton and Avis enjoyed spending time at Sebago and Moosehead Lakes and at Acadia National Park. When their grandchildren were born, they spent time helping to care for them, and never missed a sporting event, recital, or school function. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leighton. She is survived by her daughter, Samantha (Dave) of Ohio and grandchildren Bradley and Evelyn. A graveside service will be held on Monday April 3, 2023 at 11am in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot., online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com . In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick, Maine in her honor.
