Obituary

Benjamin L. Abbott, 82, of Pittsfield, died on June 8, 2026, at Concord Hospital.

Born April 8, 1944, in Eliot, Maine, Ben graduated from Eliot High School in 1962 before spending four decades serving the Department of the Navy. Beginning as a machinist and advancing to sonar transducer repair, he advanced through technical and leadership roles, ultimately overseeing vast submarine overhaul projects. His work reflected the precision and dedication that defined him throughout his life.

Beyond his civilian service, Ben held the rank of Command Sergeant Major in the United States Army Reserves.

In his community, Ben was known for being helpful and dependable—the kind of person others could rely on. He provided steady leadership and mentorship to young people through the Boy Scouts for many years, earning the Silver Beaver award, one of Scouting's highest honors for adult volunteers.

Those who knew Ben cherished his dry wit, which caught you off guard but left you laughing. It was as much a highlight of personality as was duty and steadiness.

Ben's values were uncomplicated but deeply held: honor, responsibility, and caring for family. In his later years, he found profound happiness with his wife, Jeannie, with whom he spent the last 15 years. She was the love of his life. He was a homebody and animal lover who found contentment with Jeannie by his side.

Ben is survived by his wife, Jeannie; his son, Jeff Abbott (Julie Wallace), from his first marriage to Brenda (predeceased); and his step-sons, Douglas Gerry (Julia Garibay) and David Gerry (David Heilig).

A man of few words but a steady presence, Ben leaves behind a legacy of dependability, service, and quiet devotion to those he loved.
