Obituary

Kittery Point-Beryl F. Hoyt, 88, of 9 Foyes Lane, passed suddenly on Saturday, July 25, 2020.  He was born on August 16, 1931 in Mapleton, Maine, to Foster and Lois (Carvell) Hoyt.  He attended Kittery schools and was the President of the Traip Academy class of 1950.  Beryl joined the United States Air Force and served in Japan during the Korean War.  Prior to his deployment to Japan, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Ruger, on August 18, 1951 in Biloxi, Mississippi.

After his discharge in 1955, he entered the apprenticeship at PNSY as a welder, and retired after 30 years as a welding engineering tech. He upgraded from part time to fulltime lobstering after his retirement, which led Marilyn to state that she could retire if he would give up lobstering.

Beryl had been an active member of the Kittery Point Fire Department since January 1963, serving in many capacities including firefighter, training officer Lieutenant, Captain and as a driver for a number of years. Living just steps from the station, he was usually the first one through the door for a fire call at all hours of the day and night. His signature voice signing the station on the air resonated throughout our community and his dedication to teaching the new firefighters will be long remembered.

He enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, and browsing Facebook.  He was an avid hunter, excellent volleyball player and raised bees for over 50 years.  His talents as an artist and craftsman were highlighted by his lifelike oil paintings, bird carvings, and the wooden lobster traps he built in his garage.  He passed his love of all he enjoyed to the younger generations, except for his love of the 1980's series "Solid Gold."

Beryl was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, after 68 years of marriage, and son Steven Paul.

He leaves behind his sisters, Phyllis Sanders of Portsmouth, NH and Lorraine Bullard of Kittery, ME, his brother, Murray Hoyt and his wife, Nancy of Kittery; son Gary Hoyt and his wife Anita, daughter Nancy Eslinger and her husband Ross, daughter Sharon Cray, son Brian Hoyt and his wife Cellissa; grandchildren Ryan and Erica Eslinger, James Eslinger and Crystal Stevens, Meghan (Eslinger) and Scott Batson, Stacy (Hoyt) and Jared Bridges, Kevin and Ashley Hoyt, Nichole Cray, Danielle Cray and Elayna Messenger; great-grandchildren Caroline Bruno-Eslinger and Madisyn Reynolds, Logan and Liam Eslinger, Carly Bridges, and Cole and Brooks Hoyt.

The family would like to send heartfelt thanks to all the Foyes Lane neighbors who helped, watched over and were friends to our parents through the years, and especially over the last few months.

Visiting hours will be from 4pm to 7pm on Monday, August 17th at the J. S. Pelkey and Son Funeral Home in Kittery.  Members of the Fire Service are invited to attend after 7pm.  A graveside service with military and fire department honors will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 18th at 11 am at the First Congregational Church Cemetery on Pepperrell Road in Kittery Point.  Beryl and his wife Marilyn will be joined together in rest on their 69 th wedding anniversary.
