Portsmouth-Betty J. Chapman, 91, passed away on November 25, 2016 at Wentworth Senior Living where she had been lovingly cared for the past 15 months. She was born on July 1,1925 in Kittery, Maine, daughter of Allen P and Muriel (Langton) Wiley and lived all but a few years in Kittery, most of them in the house that she and her husband had built. She graduated from Traip Academy and was the first college graduate in the family, graduating from Gorham State Teachers College. She started her teaching career in a 1 room school house near Bauneag Beg Lake and taught in Kezar Falls, York and in Kittery where she was a longtime fourth grade teacher. She was a charter member of the Alpha Delta Kappa- Epsilon Chapter sorority and a member of the York County Retirees Teachers Association. She was an active volunteer with the Portsmouth Visiting Nurses Association, Portsmouth Adult Education, Cub Scouts, and a trustee for the Rice Public Library. She lived a fruitful live as an avid golfer and fisher woman; loved to travel, spoil her grandchildren and enjoy the company of her friends and family. She rooted for the Boston Red Sox, which she always followed whether they were winning or not.
She is survived by her son Curtis and his wife Wendy of Beaverton, Ore., her daughter Karen Benoit and husband Timothy of South Berwick; granddaughter Erin Chapman and her husband Alex McGladrey, granddaughter Nicole Benoit and her husband Nouri Mahmud, grandson Trevor Chapman, great grandson Liam McGladrey- Chapman and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years Curtis and her son Bruce.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. on Friday, Dec 2 in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904, where a funeral will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Brad Hirst officiating. Online condolences may be made by visiting
