Carmel (Smith) O'Brien was born July 16, 1927, in Kittery, ME and died at her home in Kittery on December 17, 2023.

Carmel grew up with her parents and two brothers on Government Street in Kittery, only to move next door, where she raised her family and continued to live the rest of her life. She was a graduate of Traip Academy. During her life she held many jobs; being an entrepreneur restaurant owner, working on the Navy Yard, school bus driver and as an optician with Franklin Block Opticians in Portsmouth for 30 years. As an avid gardener, she spent many hours working in her beautiful gardens.

She met her husband William O'Brien (predeceased) who was the boy next-door. They married in 1946 and raised 4 children; Dennis, Larry, Steve, and Janice O'Brien (Grady).

Carmel is survived by her four loving children and their spouses (Margaret O'Brien, Janet O'Brien, Sue O'Brien, & Dan Grady) 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all. There will be a private graveside service.
