Carolyn Lee
Bogh
Jun 9, 1941 — Nov 13, 2022
Carolyn was born June 9, 1941, in Columbia, Pennsylvania , the daughter of Geraldine Alice Leonard and Clayton Hamilton Showalter. She graduated from Donegal High School in Mount Joy, PA, in 1959. Carolyn was very involved in high school activities and remained in contact with several of her classmates over the years even though she moved to Maine in 1963. Attending her high school reunion every five years was something she really enjoyed.
During the summer of 1961, Carolyn met Dick Bogh when they worked together at Pineland Center in Pownal , Maine. The following summer she returned to Maine as a Girl Scout counselor at a summer Camp and continued to date Dick. She graduated from Millersville State College with a BS in Education (English and Latin) in January 1963.
She and Dick were married February 9, 1963, in her church in Maytown , PA, and they returned to Maine to live and work for the Department of Human Services. For a period , Carolyn lived a somewhat nomadic lifestyle while Dick completed work for his M S W degree at Rutgers University. While they were in New Jersey, Carolyn worked as a teacher. In the summer of 1964, they purchased their first home on Pleasant Pond in Litchfield, ME, after which they moved to Farmingdale, ME.
After sons Len and Lee were born, Carolyn chose to stay home as a fulltime mother. Carolyn cherished her time being a stay-at-home mother, and her sons benefited greatly by having her as a companion and teacher/role model for ethics and values. She was the # 1 fan of Len and Lee, who were both involved in sports, and could be seen cheering them on as they swam, ran track and played baseball and soccer.
It was also a time when Carolyn would organize various family activities such as picnics, camping, church outings, trips to resorts, and walks in the woods. Her organization of progressive dinners was appreciated by the residents in her neighborhoods.
Earlier, Carolyn had education positions in the Lewiston, Westbrook, and Freeport school systems. When, in 1984, she was offered a teaching position at Marshwood High School as special education teacher and chair of the Pupil Evaluation Team, it was too great an opportunity to pass up. Therefore, the family relocated to Eliot, ME, which proved to be an excellent decision for the whole family. Prior to that, she had worked as a special education teacher in Lewiston, ME. Later, having earned her M-ED at University of Southern Maine, she worked as a resource room teacher at Marshwood High School in Eliot , ME, until her retirement in 1998. She took great pride as both a mother and a teacher, always giving her best to the roles she chose and found much gratification in both. Carolyn loved and was well loved by her students, many of whom kept in touch with her through the years.
Carolyn valued her job at the high school and brought a real spirit of dedication to her work. Many evenings would find her preparing extra work for a specific student that could help with the learning experience or talking on the phone with a parent of one of her students. While at Marshwood, she also served as advisor to Student Council and for the class of 1989. She was deeply honored to be asked to give the address for that class's baccalaureate
I t was in Eliot where Carolyn really blossomed in terms of her involvement i n community activities. She was a long-time president and fund raiser for the Friends of the William Fogg Library. Carolyn held several leadership positions in the Eliot Historical Society. As a member of the Advisory Board, she was actively involved in fund raising to restore the #8 Schoolhouse and initiated the yearly field trip of 2 nd graders to the one-room school. She was an active member of First Congregational Church of Eliot.
As she and Richard grew older, they enjoyed several activities together. Some were organized activities such as a cruise or traveling to resorts and other states or foreign destinations. She also enjoyed informal ly socializing with friends. Times spent with her family were of special importance to her and provided her greatest pleasures.
Carolyn is predeceased by her husband Richard.
She is survived by their sons, Leonard Soren Bogh, his wife Maya an d their daughters Ella and Sophia of South Berwick, ME; and Lee Richard Bogh and his wife Dawn and t heir daughters Emilee, Lindsey, and Ava of Eliot, ME. She is also survived by her sister Elaine Buchart of Martinsburg, PA, and her brother, Clayton Showalter Jr. of Lititz, PA, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Clayton Showalter, Sr. and her mother, Geraldine Showalter .
