Obituary

Kittery- Carrie B. Varney 91, of Whipple Road in Kittery died on January 10, 2017 at York Hospital.
Born in Kittery on February 9, 1925 she was a daughter of Eugene W. and Amelia (Hackney) Blaney. She attended local schools graduating from R.W. Traip Academy with the class of 1942..
She met and married her husband Robert Varney and together they built a home on Ox Point Drive in Kittery.
Carrie worked for her father in law at the Chesley's Cabins on US Route 1 in Kittery for a time and worked for many years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a secretary. Upon Robert's death she moved to Whipple Road in 1987 where she made her home for many years.
She and her mother in law Helen C. Varney enjoyed many years of travel, enjoying trips all over the world. Carrie enjoyed antiquing and was quite an authority on antiques. She was a talented flower arranger, bringing arrangements to shut-ins and nursing homes for many years.
Carrie was a corner stone of the Second Christian Congregational Church in Kittery, enjoying membership in the Couples Club early on , the doorkeepers, and ensured the altar flowers were just so for many years. She had her own table on behalf of the church for many years at the Christmas fair where she would make and decorate wreathes and other Christmas flowers and had a following of folks who looked for them each year. She enjoyed weekly luncheons with her dear friends Anita Mitchell, Edith Niles and Lucille Melhorn.
Carrie was a strong supporter of the arts, enjoying reserved seats at the Ogunquit Playhouse for over forty years.
She is survived by her church family, nieces and nephews and dear friends Duncan and Patricia McEachern. She was predeceased by her husband Robert in 1976 and a sister Phyllis Huntress and a brother Alvah E. Blaney.
A funeral will be celebrated on January 23, 2017 at 11am in her church, The Second Christian Congregational UCC on Government Street in Kittery with the Rev. Brad Hirst officiating.
