Kittery – CMSgt. Robert A. Read, USAF Ret., 77, of Kittery, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at his home.
He was born on February 16, 1940 in Beaumont, Texas, a son of Willam A. and Frances E. (Lightsey) Read; a descendant of Tom Read who migrated to Texas in 1830. He was a graduate of Beaumont High School and attended Lamar College before enlisting in the Air Force.
CMSgt. Read served his county during Vietnam, retiring after 30 years of service in 1989. His career field was in NAVAIDs Maintenance.While serving in England, he met the love of his life, Gillian (Jill) Elizabeth Whalley, they were married in 1964. Jill preceded him in death in 1983, which he never recovered from. They now have been reunited, forever together and happy again.
Growing up he was a Sea Scout; he was a member of HQ AFCC Chief's Group; Sargent of Arms, and Air Traffic Communications & Air Traffic Controllers Association (AACS).
He was also predeceased by a brother, William Read.
Survivors include a daughter, Samantha Read of Core, WV; sisters, Catherine Touchstone of Dayton, TX and Shirley Yeary of Jasper, TX; nieces and nephews, Lamar Touchstone, Read Touchstone, Patti Kay Wierzowiecki, Sharon Joiner, Robert Read, Pam Yeary, Candice Sloan, Mark Yeary and Arthur Wayne Yeary. Also survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews and friends around the world.
Services: A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Mark's Methodist Church in Kittery.
