Obituary

Cone Laurence Leavitt, born 10/30/1946, passed away on 8/19/2025 after living a long life full of love, hard work, lots of humor, and even more friends. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy (Hunker) Leavitt, their daughter, Kibbie Straw, their son-in-law, Christopher Straw, their grandchildren, Corbin & Veronica, his brother-in-law, Michael Rogers & wife Bev Rogers, sister-in-law, Jeannie Abbott, and husband, Ben Abbott, and many beloved nieces & nephews & their families. He is predeceased by his parents, Kibbie E (Wafer) Leavitt & Laurence Leavitt, his sister, Lura "Toot" (Leavitt) Olson & husband Milton Olson, & his brother, Randall Leavitt & wife Renee Leavitt.

Cone was part of Eliot's huge Leavitt family and lived there for most of his life. As an active child, Cone's nickname was "Did" because, if anyone ever asked, "WHO DID THIS?", Cone DID it. If you met Cone, you became a friend who was instantly welcome in his home. Cone, the consummate host, would greet everyone with, "What can I get ya?" An open garage door was a signal that anyone could stop in for a Driveway Beer and a visit while enjoying Cone's animated stories and jokes - complete with sound effects.

He loved feeding the squirrels & chipmunks, taking his boat for a cruise, fishing, hunting, going for drives, flea-marketing, woodworking, mini-golfing, going "upta camp", and "puttering" in the garage. He was a wonderful loving & thoughtful husband, sweet & supportive dad, kind & selfless father-in-law, patient & playful Papa, and was always there for his extended family.

Cone loved working & being busy. At 9 years old, he delivered newspapers on his bike. After that, he worked on George & Frank Sargant's farm & David Leavitt's farm, poured foundations for Orland McPherson, drove trucks for David Pettigrew Jr, plowed streets for the town of Eliot, and worked as a mechanic for Iafolla's in Portsmouth. He worked on big seacoast projects such as the York Wiggly Bridge, the Hampton Sea Wall, and the Mall of New Hampshire.

Cone spent over 30 years working hard and having fun as a mechanic at National Wrecker, as well as plowing snow & doing mechanical work for Roger Smith of Grounds Care Unlimited. Cone just retired on his 78th birthday in October of 2024.

Cone was in the US Army Engineer Corps 1965 to 1968 serving one tour in Vietnam 1966 to 1967, and was in the US Naval Reserves 1974 to 1984.

There will be a casual visitation at Pelkey's Funeral Home in Kittery, Maine, on Friday, 8/29/2025, from 4 pm to 6 pm. Please write down your favorite Cone stories to share with his family. Stories can be left in a basket at Pelkey's during visitation hours or mailed directly to his wife, Judy.

The rehab staff at Saint Ann's Rehabilitation Center in Dover, NH, cared for him like family while he was there, and Cone's family will forever be grateful to them.
