Obituary

Scarborough, ME - Curtis William Palmer passed away peacefully May 13, 2020 at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough, Maine. He was known for his good nature, had many friends and made everyone feel at ease with his quick wit and sense of humor.

Curtis was born March 27, 1933 in Dover, New Hampshire, the son of George Eldridge Palmer and Venice Marion (Cullen) Palmer. He grew up at the family home on Back River Road and graduated from Dover High School in 1951. He served as a Radioman in the United States Navy from 1951 – 1955 aboard the USS Shenandoah AD-26, a destroyer tender in service from 1945 to 1980. He spoke fondly of his memories traveling the world during tours to Cuba and the Mediterranean.

Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Curtis made a successful career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, utilizing his skills as draftsman in the Design and Engineering Department. As Design Liaison, Curtis was an advising member of a team performing ship checks at naval bases at Portsmouth, NH, New London, CT, and with one memorable trip to Scotland. While there, he was also able to play his beloved game of golf at The Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland.
In 1957, Curtis met his wife, Marilyn Bridges, at the Portsmouth Ship Yard where she was working as a Clerk. They were married in 1958 and together raised two children.

Curtis discovered golf in the early 1960's, introduced to the game by Marilyn's father, Thomas Bridges. He came to love both the game and his home course, the York Country Club in York, ME. Curtis was a member for the remainder of his life, nearly 58 years, where he served the Club in many capacities. He captained Twilight League teams for many years, including a championship team. He was proud to be elected and serve on the York Golf & Tennis Club Board of Directors, at one time serving as President. He participated in numerous Maine Seniors Tournaments around the state.

He enjoyed good times that are too numerous to count with Marilyn and their friends from the golfing community at York, his children and grandchildren, with their beloved Golden Retriever, Dooley and annual golfing trips to Boothbay Harbor and Bar Harbor, Maine.

Curtis is predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Palmer Martineau of Dover, NH.

Curtis is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marilyn Joanne (Bridges) Palmer, son Stephen Palmer and life partner Patricia, of Delray Beach, Florida, daughter Lynne Palmer and husband Wesley Franklin and grandchildren Haley and Christopher Franklin of Scarborough, ME.
