Obituary

Daniel Roger LaPointe

Daniel Roger LaPointe, age 66, of Somersworth, New Hampshire, beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home on July 12, 2026. He was born on February 14, 1960, in Rochester, New Hampshire, to Robert Joseph LaPointe and Kathleen May Hall.

Daniel dedicated more than 40 years to government service, spending the majority of his career leading power plant operations at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before the final years of his career took him to Colorado, Arkansas, and New York, giving him the opportunity to travel and see more of the country after spending most of his life in Somersworth. He concluded his career at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, where he was honored with the agency’s highest Silver Medal in 2016.

While Daniel was proud of his career, he was even more passionate about the people in his life. A natural leader with a generous heart, infectious humor, and larger-than-life personality, he had a remarkable ability to make everyone he met feel special and loved. Whether you knew him for five minutes or fifty years, you walked away feeling like a friend. He never met a stranger and filled every room with conversation and laughter.

Daniel was deeply devoted to his family and friends, always making time for those he loved. It wasn’t unusual for him to drive hundreds of miles to surprise family or friends with an unexpected visit, simply because he wanted to spend time together. He loved to travel, especially by train, happily spending 73 hours crossing the country because every mile brought the chance to meet someone new, hear another story, and proudly tell anyone who would listen about his daughters and grandchildren. They were the greatest source of pride and joy in his life.

He found great joy in tending his garden, following the stock market, and, above all, spending time with his grandchildren. His kindness, generosity, unforgettable stories, unwavering devotion to family, and ability to make others feel genuinely cared for leave a legacy that will continue to inspire everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Daniel is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Drew and Danielle McHugh; his brothers, Robert LaPointe and Al “Rene” LaPointe; and his beloved grandsons, Kellan and Ronan Drew, and Benjamin McHugh.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 24, at 9:00 a.m. at Saint Ignatius of Loyola in Somersworth, followed by a Celebration of Life at American Legion Post 69.

The family gratefully welcomes flowers; however, those wishing to honor Daniel’s memory through a memorial contribution are encouraged to donate to the PKD Foundation.
