David Arthur
Drew
Aug 24, 1932 — Aug 20, 2020
David Arthur Drew, M.D. passed away August 20, 2020 following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. David was born August 24th, 1932 in Loveland, Colorado to Viola Solheim Drew and Arthur Alston Drew, D.D.S. Much of his childhood was spent in Loveland Colorado where he gained an appreciation and love for the outdoors. He spent much of his free time in Estes Park fishing and hiking. As a young man, David developed a deep love for animals as he often assisted his grandfather, a veterinarian, in Grand Junction Colorado.
David was a man of brilliant intellect, great compassion, and sharp humor. One of his most endearing traits was his humility. He was well loved and enormously respected by family, friends and colleagues.
David earned a Bachelors and a Masters in Pharmacy/Pharmacology from University of Colorado, Boulder in 1955/1957, where he graduated with distinction Rho Chi (Pharmacy Honors Society) with both degrees. David met his wife, Mary Suzanne MacKinnon Drew while completing these studies, and they were married July 27th, 1957. David went on to the University of Michigan, graduating from Medical School, Alpha Omega Alpha (Medical Honors Society) in 1961. He completed an Internship and Residency at U of M, finishing in 1964. From 1964-1966, David served in the Army, first as a Research Anesthesiologist at the Army Chemical Center in Maryand, and then as the Chief of Anesthesia at the 93rd Evac Hospital, Long Bihn Republic of South Viet Nam. Upon his return he became a clinical instructor in Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan. David and Sue moved to San Diego in 1967 with three children in tow. They had two more children after they arrived in San Diego, where they lived in La Mesa and were deeply involved in community services. David worked as an Anesthesiologist at Mercy Hospital for 30 years, serving as Chief of Anesthesia from 1975-1981. Sue predeceased David in 1982.
In 1983, David married Judith Alander Burgess. David and Judy lived in La Mesa California until David's retirement in 1997. They then relocated to Southport North Carolina. While spending summers at their camp on Big Lake in Princeton Maine, they entertained friends and family often as they enjoyed fishing and boating on the Lake. In 2017, David and Judy relocated to York Maine. Throughout the years, David and Judy enjoyed life to its fullest. Judy lovingly cared for David as his health declined. David and Judy had a total of eight children between them. Mary Drew Bedrosian, MEd (Peter) of Lakeside, California; Donald Drew, MD (Rose) of Poway, California; Martha Mosier Lyford, Esq. (Tom) of Laguna Niguel, California; Sara Drew Bartlett. MEd (Jeff) of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jim Drew (Laura) of Boulder City, Nevada; Pam Burgess (Nick) of York, Maine; and Leonard "Ted" (Leanne) Burgess, Esq. of San Diego, California. He was recently predeceased by daughter Beth Howell (Tom). They have 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
David loved the practice of medicine. He was a devoted family man. He loved the Padres, The Chargers, fishing, boating, and any sport his kids and grandkids played.
While his family is devastated by this tremendous loss, they look forward to the day they are all reunited. Celebrate the wonderful man David was: be compassionate, tell a joke, and hug your loved ones.
