Dennis L.
Barnes
Oct 8, 1943 — Mar 12, 2026
Dennis Lee Barnes, passed away at home in York, ME, Thursday, March 12th, 2026. Born October 8th, 1943, in Portsmouth, NH, to Aubrey (Gilchrest) Barnes Downs and Dwight Frank Barnes. He was raised by his mother and stepfather John W. Downs.
Dennis is predeceased by his wife Patricia "Pat" (Morse) Barnes. They celebrated their 60th anniversary before her passing on April 3rd, 2023. Married on March 24th, 1963, they built a home on the same ridge where they both grew up. Dennis' grandparents were Leon and Gracie (Spinney) Gilchrest; and Loristin and Margaret (Bray) Barnes.
Dennis served in the United States Army. He was self-taught in most outdoor activities, including canoeing, hunting and fishing. He became a Registered Maine Guide in 1986, and thoroughly enjoyed devoting time and effort in his pursuit of happiness. With 35 years specialized in hunting black bear, whitetail deer and eastern turkey, he achieved the honor of Master Maine Guide.
Besides his family, his greatest pleasure was sharing the outdoors with youth and first- timers. An animated storyteller, he thoroughly enjoyed telling stories in front of a campfire. Always the photographer, he captured many of these moments for print. Later, he'd document details and write memoirs. They will be cherished for generations.
Dennis and Pat had four children: Debra, married to Joseph Crepeau; Paula Barnes; Darren Barnes, married to Christina; and Michael Barnes married to Jessica.
Ten grandchildren: Andrea (Barnes), married Gregory Holden; Bryan Barnes; Justin Marquis; Christine Barnes; Heather (Marquis) Rodrigues; Vanessa Barnes; Aaron Crepeau; Orion Barnes (predeceased); Devon Barnes, married to Jennifer; and Gabrielle Barnes.
Eight great-grandchildren: Dillon Holden, Carson Barnes, Desmond Crepeau, Connor Nunan, Allana Rodrigues, Ellie Montalvo, Amara Barnes, and Grayson Canty. He will be deeply missed.
