Obituary

Kittery- Dominic M. "Mickey" Zangari, 88 of Stevenson Road in Kittery died on December 31, 2014 at his home following a battle against cancer. Born and raised in the Puddle Dock end of Portsmouth on September 14, 1926 he was the son of the late Dominic M. Sr. and Marianna (Carelli) Zangari. He attended local schools before enlisting in the US Navy. He enlisted in the Navy early at the age of seventeen and served in the Pacific Theater of operations during World War Two as a See Bees. In 1956 he and his loving wife of fifty eight years Maxine Joanne ( Levasseur ) Zangari married and made Kittery their home. They built a home and settled on Stevenson Road where they would raise their family. He worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker, retiring as an inspector in 1982 with over thirty four years of government service. Mickey was a successful businessman, together with his wife they owned and operated "Zangi's" Parking on Walker Street for over twenty years, serving the workers of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After retirement he and his friends Al and Harry operated a painting business for a time. He was an avid hunter & snowmobiler, and enjoyed travel, especially his European trip to over ten countries, gambling trips to Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Canada and many other destinations. Mickey also enjoyed spending time at his camp in Vienna, Maine and made many friends there as well. He is survived by his loving wife Maxine of Kittery, daughters Michelle Appleby and her partner Mike Racine of Kittery and Melissa Sampson and her husband Jim of North Windham, ME; Grandchildren Michael Appleby & his wife Lesley of East Hartford, CT, Stephanie & Timothy Appleby of Kittery, Spencer & Shelby Sampson of North Windham, ME and Great Grandchildren Seraphina & Jacob Teague of Kittery as well as a niece and nephew. He was predeceased by his brother Nicholas Zangari, sister Connie (Zangari) Babkirk, brother in law Maynard Babkirk and nephew Dana Babkirk and an infant granddaughter Rebecca Appleby who died in 1989. Friends may visit with Mickey's family on Tuesday from 6-8 pm in the JS Pelkey Funral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery, Maine 03904. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 am in St. Raphael's Church with the Rev. Mower officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, POB 50 Memphis TN, 38101-9929. Care for the Zangari family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
