South Berwick, ME - Donald S. Johnson, age 65, was born October 5, 1954 to Chester and Elsa Johnson and raised on the Johnson Family Farm in Kittery. Don was a 1972 graduate of Robert William Traip Academy. He was active in the sports programs at Traip and was the Maine State high jump champion in 1971.
He was united in marriage November 13, 1982 to Sylvia Jones at Central Baptist Church in Portsmouth, NH. Their happy union was blessed with four sons: Jack, Ryan, Brett and Benjamin.
He founded his own printing business, Johnson Printing & Graphics, in 1976, which he continued to own and operate until his death with his wife, Sylvia, by his side.
For many years Don was active in the men's softball leagues in Eliot, Dover, and Rochester. He won trophies for being the most valuable player, Mr. Clutch, and league homerun leader. He participated in many tournaments on the local, state, regional, and national levels.
Don was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford, Maine and was a deacon there. He loved to read and study his Bible daily. His passions extended to Biblical apologetics including authoring a book. He enjoyed teaching Sunday School, children's programs, and adult, college-level School of the Bible classes including Bible Doctrine along with preaching. One of his favorite portions of scripture was John 3:16-17 and when favorite hymns were requested he loved to choose and sing Jesus Loves Me . He loved the people of Calvary Baptist Church and had a very special fondness for the children, who loved him and knew him as the "Candy Man".
Don went to be with his Lord on Saturday, January 4, 2020. Don will be missed by his wife, Sylvia (Jones) Johnson of South Berwick, along with family: his daughter-in-law, Bekah and Derrick Rosenbarger, grandchildren Gunnar Johnson, Serenity Johnson, and Tristan Rosenbarger of Newnan, GA; his son Ryan Johnson of Baton Rouge, LA along with his wife, Amber, and grandchildren Natalee, Alexandra, Joshua, and Olivia; his son Brett Johnson of Portage, IN along with his wife, Tonya, and granddaughter, Glorianne; his son, Benjamin, of Baton Rouge, LA; his brothers and sisters along with their spouses: Russell and Pam Johnson of York, ME, Stanley Johnson of Chicago, IL, Ken and Nancy Johnson of Sarasota, FL, Judy and Kenneth Hayes of York, ME, David and Judi Johnson of Eliot, ME, Charlie and Dorothy of Eliot, ME, Rick and Beth Johnson of Kittery, ME, and Pam and Peter Mullin of Cape Elizabeth, ME along with aunts, uncles cousins, extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Elsa Johnson, and his son, Jack Johnson.
A celebration of Don's life will be held Saturday January 11th, 2020 at Don's home church, Calvary Baptist Church at 47 High St, Sanford, ME. Visiting hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, and his service will begin at Noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Missions Fund of Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford, ME.
