Chief Edward Strong Obituary

April 28, 1945 – August 14th, 2024

Chief Edward F. Strong, a distinguished public servant and retired Chief of Police of Kittery Maine passed away peacefully on August 14th, 2024 at the age of 79.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Strong relocated to his chosen home of Maine over forty years ago. Strong began serving his community after high school when he was selected into the Special Forces unit as a Green Beret. As a Vietnam Veteran, Strong received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star with "V" for valor, the Army Commendation Medal, the Air Medal for combat flights and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with a Silver Star. He also received a Presidential Unit citation.

In Kittery, Chief Strong dedicated over three decades of service to the community and will be remembered as a respected leader and mentor to many.  His law enforcement career in Kittery spanned 33 years beginning in 1981. In 1986, he was appointed Chief, a role he enjoyed until his retirement in 2012.  During his career as Chief, he served as President of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association and was awarded the organization's 2002 Chief of the Year Award.  As a public servant and resident of Eliot, he was also a valuable member of the town's Budget Committee.

Chief Strong is survived by his wife of 32 years Gail Zamarchi Strong, and his four children Tracey, Trisha, Heather, and Matt and 5 beloved grandchildren and his sister Linda Strong Cargill.  He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his kindness, wisdom and dedication to his family and his community.  He will also be remembered for his beautiful lawn, of which he was extremely proud.

In accordance with his wishes, no funeral services will be held.  Contributions in his honor can be made to Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnel for Towers Foundation.
