Obituary

Edwin Joseph Buzzell

ELIOT, Maine - Edwin Joseph Buzzell, of Eliot, ME, passed peacefully into the waiting arms of his beloved wife, Anita, on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at the age of 89. He said she had come to him two weeks ago and told him to get a move on, that she was waiting for him, and he was never one to keep her waiting. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren, asking them to pull up chairs around his bed and "talk amongst yourselves and I'll just listen" as we shared stories and our deep love and admiration for our dad and granddad who we all called "Gray."

Ed was born on February 8, 1928, in Somersworth, NH, to John and Ruth (Kelly) Buzzell. He grew up in Somersworth and there met and married his high school sweetheart, Anita (Lacasse) Buzzell. He spent 25 years working for the National Gypsum Company in Portsmouth, NH, usually twelve hours a day, seven days a week, which his children never knew because he always came home whistling and always seemed available to them. He then worked 17 more years as a boiler operator at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard before retiring in 1991. He lived in his home in Eliot for the past 63 years which became the gathering center and sometimes home for many children and grandchildren throughout the years and was always filled with love and laughter.

Ed's easygoing, positive nature permeated everything he did, from difficult manual labor to jigsaw puzzles. He approached every part of life with a smile, and his love of hard work was an inspiration to all who knew him. He grew mouthwatering strawberries and raspberries, and a bountiful vegetable garden. He was an avid golfer and played many memorable games with his brothers, his sons and grandson-in-law. In his later years, he enjoyed stoking the fires in the woodstoves and settling down with a good book, jigsaw puzzle, or listening to his son, Steve's music on his iPod. He was a master cribbage player and enjoyed regular games with his children, grandchildren, and one of his great-grandchildren. The love and daily attentive care of his family allowed him to remain in his home, as was his wish, and enjoy many good years through his 80s.

Ed is predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Anita (Lacasse) Buzzell, his mother and father, his brother, Frederick Buzzell, his sister, Marion (Buzzell) Howland, and his beloved grandson and namesake, Edwin Libby. He is survived by his sisters Etta St. Laurent of Somersworth, NH, and Phyllis Kyreages and her husband Clarence of Dover, NH, and his brothers Raymond and his wife Eva of Dover, NH, and Roger and his wife Priscilla of Rochester, NH, as well as his four children, Linda Libby and her partner, Pat, of San Antonio, TX, Thomas Buzzell and his wife, Rojeta, of the Philippines, Patricia Galloway and her husband, Ted, of Eliot, ME, and Stephen Buzzell and his wife, Lee, of Arundel, ME, along with granddaughters Summer, Emily, Harmony, Shannon and Anita, and grandsons, Alexander, Byron, Benjamin, Nigel and Nicholas, as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Thanks to Dr. Restituto Malonso at Strafford Medical Associates for his wonderful care throughout the years and to Beacon Hospice for their excellent care and assistance in providing his wonderfully peaceful transition. A special thanks to his daughter, Patricia Galloway, for helping him live out his days at home, and to his grandson, Nigel Stanton, for the many joyful years of weekly cribbage games. Gray, you are immeasurably loved and will be deeply missed.
