Obituary

Gerald T. Moynahan (Jerry) passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Born in Portsmouth NH on October 5, 1939, to Cornelius G. and Stella M. Moynahan. A lifelong resident of Eliot, he attended St. Patrick Academy in Portsmouth and finished school graduating from Eliot High School in 1957. After high school, he joined the United States Navy where he was stationed in the South Pacific before returning to Eliot. Once back in Eliot, a chance stop to grab a cup of coffee and an off the cuff remark was made to the cute girl behind the counter earning him a towel thrown at him but more importantly gaining the love of his life and soul mate Ruthie. Together they made their home and raised their family in Eliot.

Jerry worked for a time at Gendron Lumber, Ray Grover & Son construction and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He also was quite involved in many aspects of being a good son of Eliot from working part time with the public works department plowing snow, coaching little league baseball and sitting on several town boards but it was with the Eliot Fire Department that he found his other family. Jerry was a volunteer firefighter for 62 years attaining the rank of Assistant Chief, a position he held for 36 years right to the time of his passing.

A true New Englander, Jerry enjoyed watching sports and delighted in complaining about the woes the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics were suffering. An avid golfer, he was a member of the York Golf and Tennis club for over 45 years, playing a couple of times a week.

Jerry was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Ruth I. Grover Moynahan, His parents and sisters Hannah, Kathleen, Lillian.
