Obituary

Durham, NH - Gerald "Jerry" Wright Howe died February 24, 2023 surrounded by the love of his friends and family.

Jerry's list of accolades and accomplishments is long and diverse; he served in the US Navy aboard the submarine USS Clamagore (SS-343), he earned bachelor and masters degrees from the University of Massachusetts and a Masters in Environmental Law from VT School of Law. Jerry served as an Agricultural Agent for Strafford County (NH) and with the UNH Cooperative Extension. As a Professor Emeritus at UNH, he was more than just a teacher; he was a mentor, a counselor and an advocate. His commitment guided so many of his students to success and their love of Jerry was evident.

A long time resident of Portsmouth, Jerry was dedicated to bettering his community; serving as President of Community Childcare Center and as Police Commissioner. He and his wife Jodi volunteered in support of the Police Cadets, New Heights and many other local organizations.

Always ready to learn something new, Jerry worked many jobs. If you spent time with him you are certain to have heard a beautifully told and very funny story (or two) about his adventures as an apartment complex manager or meat cutter, as a campus policeman or a construction worker, a farmer, a ski patrolman, a fisherman…

Jerry loved being on the water, fishing at Tim Pond, lobstering, exploring Great Bay. He played golf with friends and family in New England and in Savannah where he and his wife spent their winters. He enjoyed acting in theatre and film. And he loved good-old, rock n' roll music.

At the end of the day, Jerry's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years Jocelyn "Jodi" Frechette; their daughter Joslin "Sid" Chidester, her husband Sam and Jerry's newest fan, grandson Wes; Keegan Carmichael and many adoring brothers and sisters in-law, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his son Parker in 2007.
