Gilbert William
Lutz
Jul 22, 1933 — Mar 30, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gilbert William Lutz, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Gilbert passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, service, and love.
Born on July 22, 1933, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to Bertha Waters Lutz and Gilbert A. Lutz, Gil learned the value of hard work and family commitment at a young age. Following his father's early death, he worked at a local donut shop to help his family, demonstrating the strong sense of responsibility that would define his character throughout his life.
Gilbert graduated from Lawrence Schools in 1951 before proudly serving his country for four years in the Air Force during the Korean War, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served with the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Kimpo AFB, where he worked as an aerial photographer. This experience sparked a lifelong passion for photography. Upon returning home, Gilbert pursued higher education through the GI Bill, earning a business degree from Boston University in 1959, followed by his MBA in 1960.
His professional career was marked by dedication and excellence, spending over 30 years at IBM, followed by 20 years at Prudential before retirement. Throughout his long and distinguished career, Gilbert applied his analytical mind and steadfast work ethic to every challenge he faced.
In 1960, Gilbert married the love of his life, Carol Erdmann, beginning a remarkable partnership spanning 65 years. Together, they built a beautiful family and shared countless adventures, traveling throughout Europe, including England, Norway, France, Germany, Italy, China, and Hong Kong. Gilbert particularly cherished summers spent on the Maine coast with his family, creating memories that will be treasured for generations.
Gilbert was a man of many interests. His love for photography remained constant throughout his life, capturing precious moments of family gatherings and travels. He was known for his quick-witted, dry sense of humor and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures, especially a good bowl of ice cream. As a member of the Kittery Congregational Church and a devoted Rotarian, Gilbert was committed to service and community.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Graichen, and his son, Stephen Gilbert Lutz. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his sons Robert Erdmann (Karen), Charles Frederick (Marina), and Thomas Aldred (Samya); sister-in-law Jane Hilty, former daughter in law Julie and Stephen's widow Sue; his grandchildren BJ Williams (Katie), Anna Hui (Reese), Aidan, Katya, Sasha, Julian, and Bryce; and his great-grandson Felix Hui.
Gilbert's life was defined by his unwavering dedication to family, strong work ethic, and ability to find joy in everyday moments. His wisdom, kindness, and gentle dry humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Though he has left us, the impact of his life continues through the many lives he touched.
Memorial contributions can be made in Gil's name to First Congregational Church of Kittery, UCC, 23 Pepperrell Rd. Kittery Point, ME
