Obituary

Hilda Marie (Roady) Hoffstetter, age 91, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Hilda was born on October 23, 1934, in Brighton, IL, to the late Pearl P. Roady and Effie Mae (Wandrei) Springman.

A dedicated worker her entire life, Hilda lived with and worked for families in Jerseyville, IL, to support her education, eventually graduating from Jersey Community High School in 1953. She went on to attend St. Luke's School of Nursing on a scholarship until her marriage to Gerald, the love of her life, on April 18, 1954.

During the Korean War, Gerald served stateside. Following his service, the couple moved frequently across several states before settling in Western New York. During those years, Hilda maintained a large vegetable garden and spent many hours canning fresh produce. As her children grew, she became deeply involved in scouting. In addition to serving as a Den Mother, she helped establish a new Cub Scout Pack and was an active member of the Mothers' Club for Boy Scout Troop 1. She also enjoyed socializing with the ladies of the Home Bureau, crafting items such as pillows, trays, and trivets.

In 1971, the family moved to their final home in Guilderland, Albany County, NY. There, Hilda transformed their backyard—once a large sand hill—into beautiful, expansive flower gardens, a feat which was featured in a local newspaper article. As her eldest child entered college, Hilda began working outside the home, eventually becoming a Senior Principal Clerk Personnel for the New York State Department of Labor. She was so dedicated to assisting employees with their health insurance that she was honored with a Special Achievement Award from the New York State Commissioner of Labor.

Hilda and Gerald were avid travelers throughout their marriage. Before retirement, they visited 48 states, most Canadian provinces, and 10 European countries. Shortly after retiring, they completed their goal by visiting Alaska and Nebraska, and they continued to travel extensively throughout North America.

Hilda was a long-time, active member of the Guilderland Elks, initially serving with the Ladies' Auxiliary and later becoming a member in her own right when women were admitted. Along with Gerald, she enjoyed camping with the "Good Neighbor Sam" group, comprised of many of their fellow Elks. Following their retirements, Hilda and Gerald were also devoted members of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Rotterdam.

Hilda is predeceased by her beloved husband, Gerald; her brothers, Howard Roady and Edwin Roady; her sister, Frances Mueller; and her brothers-in-law, Russ Rhoades and Gary (Barbara) Hoffstetter.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Brenda) Hoffstetter and Kathryn (Tim) Runey; her grandsons, Adam (Emilia) Runey and Aubrey Runey; two great-granddaughters; her brother, Phil (Deanne) Roady; Sister-in-laws Pam Roady, and Gerry Rhoades.

A funeral service and burial will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Hilda's memory by sharing your own talents and treasures wherever you can make a difference.
