Obituary

Eliot-Hiram Alfred Young Jr. of Eliot , ME passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on August 2, 2017 while at his camp on Penobscot Pond in Maine at the age of 82.

Hiram is survived by his children: David Young and wife Nancy ; Daniel Young and his wife Donna both of Eliot, Maine; his Son Arthur Young and wife Donna of North Berwick, Maine; and his daughters Shari Laurent and her husband Hal of Cape Neddick, Maine and Jaye Sadler and her husband Kevin of Port Charlotte, FL. Hiram is also survived by his brother Arthur Young and his wife Kathy of York, Maine and by 17 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Hiram is preceded in death by his brothers Richard Young and Lyford Young; and by his daughter Diane Harvey.

Hiram Young Jr. was born on October 20, 1934 on the island of Vinalhaven off the coast of Rockland Maine, the eldest son of Hiram Sr., and Dorothy (Philbrook) Young. The family moved to the Kittery/Eliot area of Maine when Hiram was still a child, and he began working for the Maine/New Hampshire bridge authority in his teens. Hiram worked until early retirement in this capacity and then returned to the NH bridge authority to work raising and lowering the Interstate bridge until his final retirement. Hiram was also a lobsterman for many years out of the Eliot marina, and captained several boats over the years.

Hiram was married twice and raised 6 children in the Eliot area. Hiram taught his children the value of hard work, honesty and the beauty of nature. He always enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors and his fondness for the beauty of Maine with his family and friends.

Hiram was an accomplished sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping in the Maine woods. He led 31 successful moose hunts with friends and family and never failed to find "the big one". Hiram enjoyed much of his time trapping, hunting and fishing with family and friends during the years following his retirement at his camp on Penobscot pond, and it is fitting that he should end his days in his most beloved place. Hiram instilled this love of the outdoors with his children, grandchildren and many others who will surely carry on these traditions. He will be greatly missed by all those that had the good fortune of knowing him.
