Obituary

Kittery - Ida Elizabeth (Chubb) Raymond passed away May 15, 2021 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth, NH. after a brief period of failing health. She was born in Salem, MA on September 29, 1918, one of four children born to the late Bessie L. (Edwards) and Elmer T. Chubb. She was raised in Salem and summered at the family cabin in Ossipee, NH. Ida graduated from Salem High in 1936 and the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing in 1939 as a Registered Nurse.

In 1939, Ida married Roger C. Raymond of Salem. In 1950, the family moved from Essex, MA to Kittery, ME where they raised five children. She was active in her children's school activities, scouting programs, and as a member of the Second Christian Church. During her 40-year nursing career, she worked at the York Hospital and the York office of  Dr. Alexander Magocsi. She was a past president of the York Hospital Nurses Association.

Ida had a passion for cooking and large, extended family gatherings.  She was known for her traditional fall corn beef and cabbage dinners, holiday meals, and summer cookouts. There was always room at her table for more guests. She enjoyed gardening and canning. Her flower gardens were a source of pride which she maintained throughout her life. She was an avid "birder", a member of the Audubon Society, and participated in many Audubon trips throughout the country and the British Isles. Summering in Ossipee was a lifelong tradition for Ida, her children, and grandchildren. She and Roger spent many hours canoeing the lakes and streams of New England, hiking the mountains, lobstering off their lobster boat, the "Ida E", and walking the beaches and seashore observing wildlife. She loved to travel. Ida, Roger, and their pet dogs traveled across the US and Canada, camping as they went. She traveled through "every state except one".  She observed her 95th birthday in France and Switzerland and her 100th birthday in California. Ida was a dedicated New England sports fan. Her favorite players of all time were Ted Williams, Bob Cousy, and Tom Brady. Sunday afternoons would find her sitting in front of her TV with her can of beer and bowl of popcorn watching the Patriots.

Ida was predeceased by her loving husband of 66 years Roger in 2006, her daughters Joanne E. Ferriter in 2005, and Susan L. Murray in 2012; also, her brothers Donald Chubb and Richard Chubb and her sister Marjorie Moustakis. She is survived by her sons Roger Jr and his wife Elaine Bridges, David and his wife Martha, John and his partner Patricia Cotton, sons-in-law Nelson Murray and Nicholas Ferriter and daughter-in-law Margaret Raymond as well as thirteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

Ida had a rich and rewarding life. Her life was dedicated to supporting her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She kept abreast of events in their lives. She was a source of encouragement and inspiration. She had a flair for parties, card games, and festivities. Her thoughts were always focused on planning a next event which would bring the family together.

The family wishes to thank The Edgewood Centre for their dedicated care and attention to Ida during her time there.  She was grateful for it.  At her request, burial services will be private. She will be buried next to husband Roger in the Chubb family plot, Greenlawn Cemetery Salem, MA.  Care for the family is entrusted to JS Pelkey & Son Funeral Home, Kittery, Maine.
