Obituary

Jane Lemmon Howell passed away at home on October 29, 2023, at the age of 93. Born in Philadelphia on February 23, 1930, she was a graduate of the Baldwin School and later Mount Holyoke College. Jane was a decorated figure skater, often winning high-level sanctioned events and taking top places in Eastern competitions. Her strongest competition was almost always her identical twin sister, Nancy, as they each vied for the higher finish.  Highlights of her skating career include taking 3rd place in the 1945 National "Fours" competition with Nancy, Dick Button, and Harry Barton as well as taking 3rd in the 1946 National Skating Championships.   Jane was proud of her skating accomplishments and remained a keen follower of the sport. She could often be heard lamenting the dropping of the figures as the sport evolved. On rare occasions in her later years, she could be lured out onto the frozen Spinney Creek where she gave her family a glimpse of effortless grace.

Jane and Nancy's skating careers concluded at their father's insistence that they attend college. Jane majored in Biology at Mt. Holyoke College and upon graduation, became employed as a hospital laboratory technician and later a certified nurseryman while living in Ohio. Her family life led her to live in many different places including several years spent in Quebec, Canada and Mexico City, Mexico.  After moving to New Hampshire, she worked in the Biology department at the University of New Hampshire before joining the family business, Spinney Creek Shellfish in Eliot, Maine, as its bookkeeper. One of her favorite occupations was harvesting clams. Along with her husband, Sam, she created and tended to expansive gardens at each of their many homes. She was a devoted animal lover and had ten dogs over her lifetime; doting on each.

Jane was pre-deceased by her husband of 66 years, LeGrande R. "Sam" Howell, in 2018, and her oldest child, Ridgeway T. Howell, in 2008. She is survived by her son, Thomas L. Howell along with his wife, Lori A. Howell, of Eliot, Maine, and her daughter, Ruth H. Sutton along with her husband, D. James Sutton, of Buskirk, NY.

Jane is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Hannalea Howell and her fiancé, Charles, J. Long, of Rollinsford, NH; Pierce W. Howell and his wife, Caitlin, of Eliot, ME; James R. Sutton of Eagle Bridge, NY; Stephen E. Sutton, of Long Beach, CA; Caitlin L. Sutton, of San Diego, CA; Taylor P. Sutton, of Lafayette, CO; Connor A. Sutton, and his wife, Michaela, of Hoosick Falls, NY; and Summer J. Sutton, of Philadelphia, PA.  She is also survived by her faithful companion, a rescued beagle-mix named LuLu, who has been adopted by a dear friend.
