Obituary

Jean Louise (Hill) Maddocks, 88, formerly of Kittery, Maine, passed away at The Edgewood Center in Portsmouth surrounded by three of her five children on May 15, 2025. Born on December 5, 1936, in Franklin, NH, Jean was the daughter of John and Victoria (Leroux) Hill.

She married Larry Maddocks in Searsport, Maine, and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Jean was always a gracious hostess and loved to have friends over. She and Larry welcomed numerous sailors from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard into their home and loved helping the sailors acclimate to the shipyard environment. Many were treated as family and brought to dinners and parties around the neighborhood. In her earlier years, she served as a den mother for the Kittery Cub Scouts. You may have seen or met her working hard at Woolworths in Portsmouth, the former Line House restaurant in Kittery/York, The Maine National Bank, The Kittery Liquor Store, and the Kittery Trading Post, where she worked until her retirement. She and Larry were members of the Maine Obsolete Automobile League (MOAL) and can be remembered driving around the area in their red 1954 Ford F100, with Larry at the wheel and Jean smiling beside him.

With the passing of Larry in 2013, Jean spent her remaining years at The Meetinghouse Village in Kittery, surrounded by loving friends and neighbors.

Jean will be missed most by her five children, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, all of whom she treasured photos of and loved to talk about. Raising her children was her greatest joy and proudest achievement, an example of her enduring legacy of love and devotion.

She is survived by her sons Tim Russell of Basye, Virginia (Lee Ann of Merced, California); Ron Klein (Donna) of Chicago, Illinois; and Michael Maddocks (Krysten) of Dover, New Hampshire; and daughters Patti Hanley (Frosty) of Victoria, Texas; and Jodi Latham (David) of Remington, Virginia. She also leaves behind grandchildren Jennilee Russell (Mark), Emily Russell (Doug), and Zack Russell; Rochelle Scheline; Brian (Emily) and J. Latham; Jonathon (Alli) and Christopher (Mia) Klein; and Everett Maddocks. She was a great-grandmother to Jade White and Autumn and Noah Latham; and Gigi, Milo, and Liam Klein.
