Obituary

Rochester, NH- Jens Alan Wiik 36, born to Diane Marilyn Strock and øysteinAnders Wiik, in Oslo, Norway on 12 August 1981, died unexpectedly from a health challenge on 13 September 2017 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New Hampshire. He married Alina Banasyak on 6 February 2016 in Carmel, CA.   Jens attended schools in Plattsburgh, NY and Eliot, ME. He graduated from Marshwood High School (Class of 1999); Norwich University in Northfield, VT with a Bachelor's degree, Cum Laude, in History (Class of 2003); and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, with a Master's in International Policy Studies (Class of 2015).     After college, Jens was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, where his primary specialties evolved from field artillery to all source intelligence with a focus on South Asia. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exceptionally meritorious service as an Intelligence Advisor while conducting combat operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received various commendations while serving with the National Security Agency at Menwith Hill Station, Harrogate, UK and Korea. His last assignment was at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. He separated from the Army as a Captain in September of 2013.   Jens spoke seven international languages, built his own computers, and many referred to him as a "walking encyclopedia." He was often consumed with reading, and his hunger for knowledge had no bounds. He enjoyed contributing short stories to "Game of Thrones" and "World of Warcraft" blogs. Above all, he was a loving, cherished husband, beloved son, brother and friend, man of honor, and a proud American patriot.   Jens is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alina Banasyak; mother, Mrs. Diane Bailey, and step-father, Mr. Burnell Bailey (South Berwick, ME); father, øystein Wiik, step-mother, Yvonne Wiik, sister Hanna Wiik (Norway); sister, Rachel Bailey (Athens, GA); and grandmother, Elaine Strock (Pontiac, IL).   Visitation will be Tuesday, 26 September, at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home: 125 Old Post Road in Kittery, ME, 03904 from 5 to 8 p.m. Requiem Mass will be held on Wednesday, 27 September, at Trinity Anglican Church: 180 Rochester Hill Rd in Rochester, NH, 03867 from 10 a.m. to noon. Interment with military honors will take place at Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery, 83 Stanley Rd.
