Rochester – Jewel Winnifred (Garris) Hebert, 88 years old, died Sunday, December 11th, surrounded by her family.
Jewel was born in Charleston, SC on May 8, 1934. She married Ray Hebert from Somersworth, NH on June 16, 1956. They moved to NH so that Ray could serve as co-owner of Hebert's Supermarket with his brothers Roland and Donald for over 30 years. Jewel worked as a comptroller for James K. Horne Oil Company in Dover, NH, and Right on Target in Somersworth, NH. She also worked as a hostess/receptionist for the National Forest Service at Dolly Copp Campground in Gorham, NH, and as a receptionist at St. Andrews Club, in Delray Beach, FL for 16 years. St. Andrews is flying its flag at half-mast for three days in honor of Jewel this week.
Jewel served as a Girl Scout leader and helped build a camp for girl scouts. She and her husband, Ray, traveled to locations around the world and the country for decades. They square danced for 30 years, attending square dance conventions around the country. In their travels, they attended RV conventions around the country and built houses with the Habitat for Humanity Family Motor Coach group for 10 years.
Jewel was a Past President and life member of the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Somersworth Hilltop Lions Club, Democratic Women's Club, and the Family Motor Coach Association.
Jewel was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Jewel and Ray celebrated their 64 th anniversary on June 16, 2020, just before Ray passed away. Jewel is survived by her daughter Debra and her husband Donald Casey, her daughter Donna and her husband John Nettleton, her son David and his wife Sharon, her son Dan and his wife Melisa, 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Jewel was predeceased by her parents William and Clara Garris, and her brothers Bill, Charlie, and Ron Garris.
A funeral mass will be held at 930a, Friday, December 16, 2022, at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish St Martin Church, 120 Maple Street, Somersworth, NH 03878. The funeral will also be live-streamed online at www.stignatius-stmary.org , just scroll down and click "Join the Mass". A graveside service will follow the mass at St. Martin's Cemetery on Maple Street, Somersworth, NH. To leave online condolences please visit www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com .
