Obituary

Kennebunk, ME – Joan Katherine Smith, 85, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, with her loving family by her side. She was born to Wallace and Norma Wilkie on May 13, 1936, in Middleborough, MA.

Joan was a loving mother who led a life full of traveling the country and adventure. She graduated college with a degree in education, and after getting married, she and Alan packed up and headed across country. Alan was stationed in Alaska and Joan taught there for some time. She was an avid reader and loved spending the summers in Lakeville, MA at the family cottage. She was also known to have a passion for sports, spending countless games with her husband watching the Washington Capitals, for which they held season tickets. That love of sports extended to watching and cheering on her grandchildren during their baseball and hockey games as well.

She is predeceased by both of her parents.

Joan is survived by her loving husband of 61 years and retired Coast Guard Captain, Alan; her daughter Stephanie and husband Bill Tobey, and sons Douglas and Jonathan; grandchildren William Tobey Jr., Alex and wife Erin Tobey, Ryan Tobey and fiancé Aleisha, Hannah and Christian Smith; her greatgrandchildren Emma Tobey, Ryder Tobey, Macy Tobey, Brentley Tobey and Kenna Tobey; her sister Barbara Loftus and children Geoffrey and Wife Maura; and Carolyn; and cousins Jack, Carolyn, Alicia, and Betsy.

We so appreciate the care that the staff of the RiverRidge Center showed to Joan and Alan, their impact is greatly felt.

Services for Joan will be announced at a later date. Care of the Smith Family has been entrusted to the J S Pelkey and Son Funeral Home. For more information, please visit www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com .
