Berwick-John ("Jack") Patrick Wilfred Downes, born November 2, 1959, died January 7, 2024 after a brief illness. Surrounded by family at the end, Jack leaves behind his best friend and wife Mary Jane Downes, sons Gregory and David, and their partners Courtney and Becca, sisters Elizabeth Downes and Mary Downes, stepsons James and wife Kathryn Spinney, Steven Greenwood, and dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jack grew up in Weare, NH and called both New Hampshire and Maine his home. A deeply caring, funny man, Jack was the guy with the story or a dry aside that could get people laughing. Jack was a 'rock' to many people, and as a result they sought him out and looked up to him. Jack had many interests, but maybe highest among them was his love of cars. While some kids learn which dinosaurs are which, Jack learned to identify makes and models of cars as soon as he could talk; over the course of his life, he owned more than 50 of them. He was also passionate about social issues, always put humans and humanity first, and was particularly concerned for the underdog, which was one of the best traits his father passed on to him. Jack could, and did, strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere: at the supermarket, a party, a concert, or the dump. He was curious about everyone and looked for the best in people. He will be sorely missed.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 3 at First Congregational Church of North Berwick, UCC at 15 High Street in North Berwick, ME at 11 am followed by a reception.
