Obituary

KITTERY POINT, Maine - John Crawford Hackney, 92, Kittery Point, died on Friday, November 11, 2016 at his home.John was born and raised in the same home where he passed away. He attended local schools including RW Traip Academy graduating with the class of 1942. He was the son of Clarence and Alice (Patch) Hackney.

He met and married his loving wife Helena M. (Harvey) Hackney and together they raised their family in Kittery Point. He served in the Army from 1948-1949. John worked for many years for Cushman Baking Company in Portland as a delivery man as well as Merrill and Ward Candy Company in Portsmouth New Hampshire. Early in his career he worked at the I-95 tollbooth in Kittery and was handed out the very first check for the interstate. He also worked for sixteen years at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Active in the outdoors he loved deer hunting, especially his trips up north with his hunting buddies, and canoeing. John also enjoyed camping with his family eventually moving into their small camping trailer in Weld, Maine. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed time spent golfing at the York Golf and Tennis Club even holding the title of club champion one year.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty seven years, Helena of Kittery Point, son Thomas Hackney of Kittery Point, and daughter Nancy and Alan Estes of Kittery. Also his seven grandchildren Christina (Jerry) Prestridge of Mons Belguim, Melissa (Adel) Mohammed of Derry, N.H., Jennifer Estes of St Louis Mo., Alicia(Paul) Marquis of Kittery, David Estes of Hawaii, Jeffrey Estes of Kittery and Jessica (Seth) Legere of York, and his fifteen great-grandchildren Hannah, Cameron, Faith, Lila, Abigail, Hunter, Erin, Summer, Quinn, Ava, Elijah, Sophia, Cale, Reagan and Paisley; his sisters-in-law Theresa Poulin and Audrey Wilkinson, plus nephews Greg (Susan) Hackney and daughter Stacy, John Wilkinson Jr., and nieces Kathy (Jon) Pridham and Mary (Steve) Craig.

John was predeceased by his parents, sister Janie and brother Clarence, Jr., (Hack).
