John D. Marcus, 88, of Portsmouth N.H. died Friday January 5, 2024, following a short period of failing health.

Born in South Dakota on February 16, 1935, he was the son of John and Julia Markus. He is survived by his loving wife, Winnifred "Win" of Portsmouth: son John and wife Jean of Eliot, Maine: granddaughter Jennifer Marcus of Dover, N.H.: granddaughter Jillian Romeo and husband Anthony of Eliot, Maine: sister Edith Sapp of Minnesota.

While proudly serving over 20 years in the Air Force, he and his family moved numerous times due to military assignments and made many long-lasting friendships and memories. After retiring from the Air Force in 1976, Portsmouth N.H. became home for John and his family.

John was a wonderful husband, father "Poppa" and friend to many people during his life. One of our fondest memories is hearing him sing "You are My Sunshine" to his family who he was devoted to.

A military honor service will be held in the chapel at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen New Hampshire on Thursday January 18, 2024.
