Obituary

John "Jack" Z. McArdle, 88, of Kittery Point, Maine passed peacefully in his sleep May 11, 2018 from pneumonia. Jack was born in Syracuse, NY, to William and Theresa (Herzberg) McArdle.

After graduating from the New York Maritime College in 1950, he was commissioned into the US Navy. He was stationed at the USN Taylor Model Basin in Maryland, a facility for testing maritime designs and capabilities. Jack was married to his beloved wife Margaret "Joan" (Armstrong) from September 1953 until her death in 1995. They moved to Kittery in 1956 near the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he was a nuclear engineer. He was part of the early days of nuclear submarines and was there in 1959 when the world's first, the Nautilus, came in for overhaul and refueling.

Jack was never one to miss a chance for weather reports, Red Sox Radio, cups of coffee, or good jazz. He was happiest enjoying lifelong sports of racing sailboats or winter skiing, which he did into his 80's. Summers were also family time at York Harbor, "camping" at the lake, Fort Foster picnics and local ice cream stops. During school years he could be found as coach-dad in the yard and at games or helping with math and science homework. A lifelong member of the Catholic faith, he was active at St. Raphael's Church. After retirement, he stayed engaged with his community and it was rare that a day went by when he wasn't out and about helping local organizations. He was a volunteer or member of The Red Cross, Boosters and Rotary Clubs, Knights of Columbus, and Footprints Food Pantry, among others.

He is survived by children, Mark McArdle and wife Mary Ellen, Rochester, NY, Kathleen Lebel and Rick Foster, Cape Neddick, ME, Paul McArdle, Milton Mills, NH, Anne McArdle and Jim Donnelly, Lamoine, ME, and Lynn McArdle, San Francisco, CA; grandchildren Juli Lapham Reed, Casey Lebel, and Joell Lebel. Also five great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family. Predeceased by his wife, son Edward "Ned" McArdle, and sister Jean (McArdle) Barrett.
