Dover- Joseph A. "Grampy Joe" Silsby, 82 of Homestead Lane in Dover died on March 8, 2015 at Wentworth Douglass Hospital . Born on January 28, 1933 on on Gerrish Island in Kittery Point, Maine, he was a son of the late Robert and Eva ( Noyes ) Silsby. He and his wife Estelle made a home and raised a family on Bartlett Road in Kittery Point for many years until her death in 1994. He was active in his children's lives supporting the Boy Scouts of America as a den leader and supporter even when he saw a scout today. A hard working man he lobster fished in his younger years, was an electrical lineman and worked for Carroll Plumbing Supply. Later in life he serviced and installed home heating for Coleman Oil before founding Silsby Heating and Cooling which he owned and operated for many years, serving many families throughout the area. He also worked as a cabinet maker a skill and talent he still enjoyed in his basement workshop, sharing his talents with his grandchildren as they worked side by side with him making woodworking creations. In 1995 he married his loving wife of twenty years Francis Benway, and together they made a home in Dover, enjoying retirement. They enjoyed travel to Florida, Myrtle Beach, made many friends in Mississippi, and enjoyed gardening. He loved animals including his friend "Homer " the cat. He is survived by his family: his loving wife Frances of Dover, children; daughters, Mary Jean and husband Billy Graham of Presque Isle, Judy and husband Bruce Wilbur of Portsmouth, Theresa Young and husband Dave of Lee, Katie Benway of Kittery; sons, Michael and wife Lucy of North Berwick, Jay of Kittery Point, Mike Benway and wife Sharon of Rochester, Charles Benway Jr and wife Karen of Westford; he had 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Joe has so many great friends and friendsthat were family like Norm and Cathy Gonthier, Bob and Cecile Poliquin and Sean and Simone Tieng. Friends are invited to visit with Joe's family on Sunday from 3-5 PM in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery Maine 03904. A funeral will be celebrated on Monday at the funeral home at 11am with the Rev. Donna Muise officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cocheco Valley Humane Society 262 County Farm Road Dover NH 03820. Care for the Silsby family is entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
