South Berwick-Joyce E (Pray)Borkowski, 89 of South Berwick, Maine, passed away on Saturday April 21 at St. Ann's in Dover NH
Joyce was the daughter of Charles S. Pray Sr and Eunice C.Pray. Born February 9, 1929 in Dover NH and lived on the Pray farm owned by her grandparents in Somersworth, NH until her family moved to Academy Street, South Berwick, Me in 1934.
Joyce attended Central school for eight years then Berwick Academy where she was active in sports and music, graduating in 1946. There she met her lifelong friends Pat Linscott and Kathy Keelty.
After attending Westbrook Jr. College for two years she went to the University of Maine in Orono graduating in 1950 with her degree in Education. After graduating she taught social studies and women's athletics at Traip Academy in Kittery, ME. There she met her husband Walter A. Borkowski and they were married for 50 years.
Teaching was a joy for her and her husband. In 1969 the family relocated to Exeter NH where she taught physical education at Exeter Elementary school before retiring in 1983. She soon became very active in the creating of the Archives at Berwick academy and retired from there in 2009.
She was a very active member of the Old Berwick Historic Society, the South Berwick Library and was a member of the First Parish Federated church.
Joyce and her husband loved to travel and spent many trips to England, Ireland, Russia, Crimea, Ukraine, Poland and other areas. She was devoted to and loved spending time with her family and summers at Mousam Lake. She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family, she is survived by a son Timothy and his wife Gail of York; daughter Kristen and her husband Gary Long of South Berwick; grandchildren Heather Borkowski and husband Bob Hunter of Scotland, Jesse Borkowski of Boston; Ryan and William Long of South Berwick; a brother Charles S. Pray Jr, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Walter A. Borkowski and her son Scott C. Borkowski.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 11:00 am at the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick, Maine followed by a reception in the vestry. Care for the Borkowski family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
