Obituary

Kenneth L. Tibbetts, 82, died at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital on March 24, 2014 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson Diseases. He was born at Kittery point on June 21, 1931 to Charles and Christine (Locke) Tibbetts. A true Mainer, he was the 8th generation great grandson of William Chadbourne, founder of the 1st sawmill in America (Berwick, ME in the 1630's) Born during the depression, the 10th child of a family of 11 children. Being very poor, he had to get used to wearing old clothes and shoes that did not fit, to go to school. He overcame an abusive childhood and excelled as a "Teddy Bear Dad." No child should suffer the beatings he had. When he turned 17, he enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and received an honorable discharge. He married his sweetheart and soul mate, Evelyn on March 19, 1966. They shared 48 years of marriage. In the 1960's, he was assistant Scoutmaster, then Scoutmaster of Troop 313 in Berwick. He would always use his vacation time to take Troop 313 to Camp Hines. He assisted his friend, Tony Cincotta with Little League and Senior League Baseball as well as Noble Squires Football Program with Ed Poulliot. He worked many years at Prime Tanning then General Electric in Somersworth. During his employment at G.E., he was voted in the 1st 2nd Vice President, vice president then president of the GE Employee's Association. He had an amazing committee and excelled in all his functions. He was an active member of American Legion Post #79, Berwick. You could always count on Kenny to help with their annual raffles. He was a 27-year member of Dover Elks # 184 and a past officer. He enjoyed helping the Elks with Sunday Bingo. When his wife worked the parish suppers at Our Lady of Peace, you would usually find Kenny doing dishes with Mike Wright. He became a good friend to Fr. Marcel Dumoulin and decided he wanted to join the Catholic religion. He was baptized, made his First Communion and Confirmation (with godparents Pat Dubay and sister Loretta) and Fr. Bob blessed his marriage all the same day. His greatest fun out of life was going to Hawaii 8 different times with his best friends, Pauline and Denis Moore. Also, all the fun trips to Vegas, Grand Canyon, Florida, Atlantic City and Foxwoods. He enjoyed many bus trips throughout the US. Even in his wheelchair, he enjoyed Foxwoods and Oxford Casinos. Before he gave up his license, he would take all the Great Danes for daily rides and stop at Cumby's to chat with Linda and Mike. He was a great outdoor sportsman, loving hunting and fishing. He would take the kids ice fishing and the neighborhood kids called him "Mr. T." He loved gardening, his berry bushes and fruit trees. The last few years, he enjoyed grandson, Levi. Levi would tease his Pepere then give him a big hug and kiss and say "Just foolin' Pepere!" He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Duquette) Tibbetts, sons, Kenneth, wife, Dawn, granddaughters Brianna and Sarah, Rick, wife Mary, grandkids, Adam, Ashley, and Alisa, James, grandson, Cote, Roland, grandson, Levi, daughter, Christine, grandsons, Kyle and Torren, Also, many great grandchildren, and a brother, Gordon He was predeceased by his oldest son, Gary (who has 3 children, Rosalie, Brandon and Christina) His brothers, Bernard, Charlie, John and Roland (who was his protector), his sisters, Eleanor Squillante, Helen Garnet, Phyllis Skoropouski, Beatrice Merchant and Shirley Baker. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8pm in Bernier Funeral Home 49 South St., Somersworth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 11:00am at St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish in St. Martin Church, corner of West High and Maple Streets in Somersworth with Rev. Michael S. Taylor, pastor as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in the spring in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth. The Town of Berwick has lost a piece that truly made it special.
