Eliot- Lawrence E. Shirk, 79 of Cedar Road in Eliot died suddenly on October 2, 2021 at his home.
Larry was born on October 24, 1941 in Monroe Township ,PA one of nine children to the late Merrion S. And Nettie ( Pyle) Shirk.
He entered the United States Marine Corps in March of 1958 and was assigned to the 1 st Marine Division stationed in the Pacific and islands in the Mediterranean and then ending up at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Marine barracks, where he attain the rank of corporal and was discharged in 1962.
In civilian life he worked for Badger Farms Creamery until 1964 when he began a career insurance working for metropolitan life insurance company in Biddeford Maine, and then in The York Maine office. He served as Senior Sales Representative for the company's and was employed with them for twenty six years.
Active in his community Larry became a member of the Eliot Volunteer Fire Department serving as treasurer from 1976 to 1991 and remained a firefighter for the department until today, serving as a friend and and mentor to many over the years. He was a member of the Seacoast Detachment Marine Corps League, Northeast Bass Masters Club, Clearwater Bass,Club , and Marshwood bass club, as well as Coastal Six bass club and was active with " Camp Carefree" a fishing camp for kids. An avid fisherman and Hunter he respected the wildlife and surroundings. Always helping someone and doing many other jobs for the elderly and fellow townsman. He enjoyed raising Herefords and other farm animals on the site of the old Morin Brickyard in Eliot.
Larry also enjoyed many of his outdoor activities, as well as snowmobiling at his camp in Cooper Maine,
"Gramps Camp" , Larry also enjoyed countless afternoons at the pool on the farm as well as many card nights at the farm
He loved time spent with family, playing cribbage at the Rod and Gun Club, ice fishing, checking out every single ice cream stand in the area and many breakfast stops at the Sunrise Grill with close friends.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Carole A. (Rogers) Shirk, son Kirby A. Shirk, daughters; Kimberly A. And her husband Dale Pillsbury, Lauren E. And her husband Paul Reindl, Rhonda Shirk and her partner Heidi Brown and Rebecca Crowley and her fiancee' Edward Moreau , grandchildren; Jeremie Pillsbury and his wife Amy, Elizabeth Hankin and her husband Patrick, Brandon Baker and his partner Shelby, Megan Pillsbury and her fiancee' Andrew and Banning Crowley, great grandchildren; Kayleigh and Nolan Hankin, and Duke. Pillsbury.
Friends are invited to visit with Larry's family on Wednesday October 13, 2021 from 4-7pm in the JS Pelkey and Son Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery Maine 03904, a funeral will be celebrated on Thursday October 14, 2021 at 1pm in the Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman officiating. Burial and Marine Corps honors will follow in Brooks Memorial Park in Eliot. Donations may be made in Larry's memory to the Eliot Firefighters Association 1323 State Road Eliot, Maine 03904 or to Footprints Food Pantry POB 246 Kittery Maine 03904.
