Kittery- Leighton Langley, 91 of Kittery was born on December 9, 1923 in Eliot to Albert and Evelyn ( Spinney ) Langley. He graduated from Eliot High School with the class of 1944. He was a proud World War Two veteran serving in the United States Army Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific Theater. After Leighton returned from the war he worked in various venues including picking potatoes in Aroostook County and fighting the Maine fires of 1947. He began a career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he would eventually meet his wife, Avis ( Fogg ) Langley. They were married in 1964 and recently celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary. Following his retirement after thirty years of service at the Shipyard, Leighton served as the sexton at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Portsmouth where he and Avis were members. Leighton enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and was an avid reader. He was a devoted grandparent and greatly enjoyed attending his grandchildren's many athletic events. concerts and recitals. Leighton is survived by his wife Avis of Kittery, his daughter Samantha Langley of Gorham, ME, his grandson Bradley Turnbaugh of Bozeman, MT, granddaughter Evelyn Turnbaugh of Gorham, ME, neices and nephews Robert Carmel of Rochester, NH, Judith and Neil Weatherbie of Twin Falls, ID and Peter and Debbie Carmel of Wells, ME along with a large extended family. Friends are invited to visit with Leighton's family on Friday from 10am to noon in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home where a funeral will be celebrated at noon. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to an environmental charity of one's choice. Care for the Langley family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
