Lionel H. Tanguay, 93, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2013 at the Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover. He was born to the late Louis and Elise Tanguay on April 12, 1920 in Somersworth. He had many happy years growing up in New Dam with his seven brothers, four sisters and many cousins. In fact, there were so many of them in the neighborhood that they were able to form a baseball team of just Tanguay boys. After serving his country in WWII, Nel returned home to marry his life-long sweetheart, Viola Demers. They had three children; Bill, Gary, and Gail. Nel worked at Davidson Rubber Company in Dover for most of his working career. He started in the factory and later worked in the Human Resources Department. Nel was known for his even temperament and a pleasant way of working with all people. In retirement years, Nel and Vi spent their winters in Zephyrhills, Florida, enjoying the beautiful weather. Nel played golf at Cocheco Country Club and enjoyed spending time with his golfing buddies. He enjoyed playing cards and doing crossword puzzles. He loved gardening. There were many years that he and his sons would compete for the earliest, biggest, and best-tasting tomatoes. He always had a workshop or shed where he could keep his tools for tinkering and fixing things. He was a lifelong member of St Martin s Church in Somersworth. His family referred to him as Pepere or Pep. More than anything, Pep loved being with his family. With unfailing dedication, he sat by his wife s side for nearly two years while she struggled with failing health. Pep loved to joke around with his grandchildren and enjoyed their activities, recitals, and games. Nel is survived by his son, William, of Durham, and his daughter, Gail, of Dewitt, Michigan. He was predeceased by his wife Viola in September and his son Gary in April. Other family members include daughters-in-law Susan Tanguay of Durham and Marilynn Tanguay of West Boylston, Ma. and son-in-law Peter Cook of Dewitt, Michigan. He is also survived by seven beloved grandchildren; Sarah Robinson, David Tanguay, Kate Kent, Jonathan Tanguay, Elizabeth Melehov, Molly Cook and Stephen Cook, as well as six great-grandchildren. He was a man of determination, integrity, and great pride. A private service will be held at Bernier Funeral Home in Somersworth. A graveside service and a celebration of Nel s life are planned for early April. www.bernierfuneralhome.net
