Loretta Margaret Downey, 96, of York Maine, passed away on March 2, 2022, after a short illness. Born in Brighton, Massachusetts on August 15, 1925, she raised a loving family in Boston and York Beach, Maine. Loretta's greatest pride and pleasure was her family.
She is survived by daughter Linda Downey of Eliot , ME; daughter Denise Moan and husband Richard Moan of Shrewsbury, MA and their children David Moan and wife Evelyn Limon, Kristin Stringer, and Jeffrey Moan; son Thomas Downey and wife Teresa Downey of Chichester , NH and their children James Downey, Kathryn Downey, Laura Downey and Shannon Downey; and daughter Laurie Troy and husband Shawn Troy of York , ME and their children Ian Hair, Diane Hair, Sara Figie and Patrick Troy; great grandchildren Morgan Stringer, Brooke Stringer, and Isabela Moan Limon; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Loretta was predeceased by her husband, George J. Downey and their first child, Diane Marie Downey; sister Helen Mealey and brothers John Burke and Albion Burke.
Loretta graduated from Sargent College at Boston University in 1946 and married George in 1948. Her first position was as a high school basketball coach. After spending valuable time at home until her youngest child was of school age, Loretta took a position as a Physical Education teacher in the Waltham Public Schools. She taught in the Waltham Public School System until her retirement. She was her children's and grandchildren's biggest fan while attending many sports games. She was an avid Boston sports fan. Loretta and George had a remarkable group of life-long friends. She would often be on the dance floor on m any occasion s . The Jitterbug was her specialty.
Friends are invited to join her family on Saturday, March 12, 2022, for a visiting hour at 10:00 am followed by an 11:00 am celebration of life service, both held at the First Congregational Church of Eliot. Loretta's family requests those in attendance wear a face mask. Burial is Monday, March 14, 2022, at 11:00am at the Holyhood Cemetery, Chestnut Hill, MA.
The family ask that in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation ( https://www.cff.org/ ) or the First Congregational Church of Eliot ( https://www.eliotucc.org/ ) in Loretta's memory.
