Obituary

Fairfax, VA - LTjg Shirley M. Woodworth Renner, USN, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, passed away peacefully at her home in Fairfax, Virginia on April 26.  Born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont on April 9, 1923, Mrs. Renner attended schools in Woodbury, VT and high schools in Bar Harbor and Kittery, ME (Traip Academy '41).  After graduating from Lowell General Hospital School of Nursing ('45) in Lowell, MA, and working for a short time at Portsmouth Hospital, she joined the US Navy Nurse Corps, serving five years at various duty stations: St. Albans, NY; Camp Lejeune, SC; Oak Knoll, CA; and aboard the USS General William "Billy" Mitchell during the Korean War.  One of two nurses aboard ship, she witnessed active combat, landings and evacuations, and cared for wounded service men and refugees while at sea for several thousand miles in the Pacific Theatre.  After meeting and marrying fellow shipmate, the late LCDR Conrad J. Renner, USN in 1951, she resigned her commission and they were transferred to Newport, RI where she became a Navy wife and mother.  In 1959 Conrad left the Navy and after a short time living in Ft. Lauderdale, FL they ultimately settled in Dover, NH where they raised two children.   Shirley loved all living things, especially dogs and flowers and babies.  She established and ran Shirwood Kennels and was an active member of Piscataqua Obedience Club for many years; and her 10' tall Hollyhocks were acclaimed and well documented!  She was a Girl Scout and 4-H volunteer, and as an avid collector of Sasha dolls among others, she belonged to San-D-Over Dollers and the New England Sasha Club.   Well loved by her family and all who knew her, Shirley was a strong and independent, positive, compassionate, virtuous soul--a lifeline for the underdog, a witty jokester who would break into song or verse as the spirit moved her with a twinkle and a smile.  She is predeceased by her husband LCDR Conrad J. Renner, USN, and siblings Donald Woodworth, Dale Woodworth, and Elaine Derry.  She leaves behind a daughter, CAPT Carol McDevitt, USN (ret) (James, COL, USA (ret)) of Fairfax, Virginia; a son, Christopher J. Renner, Sr. of Dover; two granddaughters, Caitlin Seguin (Thomas) and Meghan Latour (Lawrence) of Virginia; two grandsons, Christopher J. Renner, Jr. and Chancellor J. Renner of the Seacoast area; five great-granddaughters; and several nephews and nieces.  Family and friends are welcome to attend a funeral mass at 11:00 am on June 30 at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Kittery, ME, to be followed by interment at the First Christian Church Cemetery on Kittery Point.    Memorials may be sent to any local Humane Society or ASPCA.
