Margaret (Margo)
Campbell Heun Bradford
Mar 3, 1946 — Dec 30, 2021
Kittery, ME - Margaret (Margo) Campbell Heun Bradford, 75, of Kittery, ME died on December 30, 2021, following a two-year battle with cancer. She was born on March 3, 1946 in Richmond, IN to Howard Thurston and Mary (Gentry) Heun.
Margo attended the public schools of Montgomery County, MD, Rosemary Hall in Greenwich, CT, and graduated from The Madeira School in McLean, VA. She attended Vassar College for two years, leaving to marry Charles Bradford in 1966. The marriage ended in divorce.
Margo devoted her life to public service, volunteerism, and civic engagement. After a start at Philadelphia radio station WKYW and the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, she moved to Washington, DC and for ten years directed the Association of Junior Leagues Regional Office. From 1991 to 2011 she advocated for and supported National Institutes of Health (NIH) patients and their families as they faced life-threatening illnesses. As Operations Manager of The Children's Inn at the NIH, she helped create a home-like environment in which seriously ill children and their families could stay together. Later she served as the founding Operations Manager at The Safra Family Lodge at NIH, a residence for adults receiving treatment and their families.
Margo was organized and unflappable at work and also as co-owner of part-time catering business "We'll Cook Your Goose". She lightened the load for hosts with delicious meals and seamless event planning.
She retired in 2011 and continued her longtime volunteer work with The Madeira School and other area nonprofit organizations. She was repeatedly singled out for her contributions.
In 2016 Margo moved to Kittery and fulfilled her lifelong dream to live in a state she had loved and visited every year since age 6. She was devoted to her new community and volunteered with the Rice Public Library, the Seacoast Democrats, and other local causes.
Margo will be missed for her kind thoughtfulness and ability to make a positive impact in her community. She will be remembered fondly for her Indonesian curry, encyclopedic knowledge of the British royal family and china patterns, and love of animals, particularly of the Labrador retriever variety.
She leaves behind a sister, Lisa Heun Locke of Corinth, VT, nieces Emily Gentry Locke of Washington, DC and Caroline Fuller Locke of Corinth, VT, nephew William Howard Locke of Kittery, ME, four cousins, and many friends who hold her dear.
A gathering to celebrate Margo will be held in the spring in Kittery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Madeira School, 8328 Georgetown Pike, McLean, VA 22102, or the Rice Public Library Capital Campaign, 2 Walker Street, Kittery ME 03904.
Care for the Bradford family has been entrusted to the J S Pelkey & Son Funeral Home.
