Maria Elena Volpi, age 74, of Kittery, Maine passed away on March 28, 2025 following a period of failing health.

Maria was born in Newark, New Jersey on June 24, 1950, later moving to Kittery, Maine as a young child. Upon graduating from Traip Academy, Maria joined the Navy, where she met her husband, and later moved to Washington D.C., where they both worked for the U.S. Government.

Upon transferring to Parkersburg, West Virginia, Maria and her husband both took on roles with the U.S. Department of the Treasury, going to work and eating lunch together everyday.  Maria completed an undergraduate degree from West Virginia University, leading to a career as an auditor for the IRS. During this time, Maria was a source of strength for her husband during an almost two-decade battle with cancer and other illnesses.

After her husband's passing, Maria completed her Master's in Business Administration from Marshall University, a pursuit that Maria and her husband started before he passed. Upon the completion of her MBA, Maria decided to return to Kittery and became an accountant for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Maria is survived by her son, James and his wife, Michelle; her grandchildren, Daniel and Arianna; her brother, Paul and his wife Peggy; her sisters, Isabel, Lil, Kathy, and Doreen, and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents, Paul and Patricia Diego, and her husband, James Volpi.

A visitation will be held at J S Pelkey & Son Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine, from 11AM to 1PM, on April 3rd, with a service immediately following. Ultimately, Maria will be reunited with her husband when she is laid to rest at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, in St. Louis, Missouri.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Maria's memory to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
