Obituary

Old Saybrook, CT - Marie Odelie Ross, 102, passed away on October 25, 2014 at the Gladeview Nursing Home in Old Saybrook, CT. She was born on November 27, 1911 in Rochester, New Hampshire, a daughter of Joseph and Odelie (Vaillancourt) Brochu. Blind by the age 30, from a genetic eye disease, Marie Ross had one of the first corneal transplants (both eyes) in New Hampshire, regained her vision and was active in promoting organ donation throughout New England. She was an active parishioner at St. Martin's Church in Somersworth and Les Dames de St. Anne, a USDA Extension Homemaker, an avid attendee of Elderhostel, active in her Senior Center and a member of the Women's Democratic Club. She started Hilltop Kindergarten in her home in 1962 and taught nearly 500 children in Somersworth, NH. In her later years, at Gladeview Health Care Center, she "read books to the old people" well into her early 100s. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Lorenzo T. Ross on December 24, 1972 and her seven sisters and brothers. Survivors include three daughters, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: daughter Jeannine Marie Cantin of Ogunquit, ME, and her children Kerri Bamford, Keith Cantin, and grandchildren, Carly Bamford, Megan Bamford, Delaney Bamford and Cole Cantin; daughter Mariette Agnes Woolfson of Old Saybrook, CT, and her children, Mark Woolfson and Steven Woolfson of Boston, MA, and her grandchildren, Reed Woolfson Jarvis, Blaine Woolfson Jarvis and Will Woolfson Jarvis of Hartford, CT and daughter Lorraine Natalie Ross/Ellis of Annapolis, MD and Pompano Beach, FL A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 30, 2015 at St. Martin Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish, 125 Maple Street, Somersworth. Fr. Michael Taylor, Pastor, was celebrant. Interment and a private family service followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Somersworth.
