She was born on January 16, 1930, in Eliot, Maine, to her parents Eliot and Hazel Fernald of Park Street in Eliot.

Gram's hobbies included gardening and maintaining her beautiful yard and flower garden. She was very talented at cooking and baking; she would donate pies to the church in Eliot, and she always had homemade food and desserts ready for family and friends who would stop by. She remained very close to all her siblings: Virginia Bennett (deceased), Grace Locke (deceased), Eliot Jr.(deceased), Bernard (deceased), Alden (deceased), Gladys Butterworth of Eliot, Maine, Glenna Brown (deceased), and Donald (deceased).
