Obituary

Martin Kauffman - one of the world's true romantics, died peacefully on May 22nd, 2024.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, to Harry and Pearl Kauffman in 1933, Martin graduated from Rutgers University (1955) and proudly served our nation through the US Army in Korea (1956-1958).

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Julia Staples Kauffman; his brother, Donald Kauffman; his daughter, Jennifer Findell; and his sons, Jesse Kauffman, Jon Kauffman, and Todd Bemis. He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Martin is preceded in death by his son, Alex Kauffman, who died in 1994.

Martin's professional career as an auditor and controller for ExxonMobil took him to Brazil, Chile, Thailand, and London. Here in the US, he lived in New Jersey, Florida, Texas, and Connecticut before retiring to York, Maine and Boca Raton, Florida. He was fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and dabbled in Russian, "just to show off."

Martin's interests included whistling through airports, awkwardly singing Brazilian jazz standards, appreciating beautiful views, voraciously reading classics and trash detective stories alike, playing truly mediocre golf, sailing, and asking other people to fix things around his house. His greatest joy was spending lazy days full of laughter with his growing family wherever and whenever he could.

He is, and will remain, deeply missed and honored by his family. So, we leave you with a Martin maxim, "La vida es corta. Hay que gozar la!"

Gifts in memory of Martin should be made via donation to the York Public Library, one of his favorite institutions. Please see the link below.
