Obituary

Kittery - Mary Louise Howard Dennett died on March 3, 2018, in Kittery, Maine.  Born in June of 1922, to Noble and Maria Estelle Layng Howard. She spent her youth in Round Bay, Maryland before marrying Armistead Dennett, Commander, USN.  Together they embarked on a life that took them to duty stations across the United States and Europe.  After retiring from the Navy, Louise and Army moved their family to Seabrook, Texas, where Army joined NASA at Johnson Space Center, until retiring permanently to the Dennett family homestead in Kittery, Maine, in 1981.

Louise actively involved herself in every community in which she and her family lived, including churches and naval-officer wives' clubs.  In Texas she ran for the local school board; she volunteered with the League of Women Voters, the American Field Service, and KUHT - the country's first public television station; and was a member-supporter of the community theatre.  Through her involvement with the Institute of International Education, she and Army frequently opened their home to high-school exchange students and Fulbright Scholars.  In Maine, she volunteered in several capacities at St John's Episcopal Church and the Portsmouth Athenaeum, Friends of the Rice Public Library and the Harborside Garden Club.

Louise is survived by her sister, Ellen Wardlow Howard of Brookings, Oregon; her three children Sarah, Peter, and William; eight grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Louise asked that, instead of flowers, anyone wishing to honor her memory send a contribution to The Common Table, the Altar Guild, or the Ministers' Discretionary Account at St John's Episcopal Church, 100 Chapel Street, Portsmouth, NH 03801.

A memorial service will be held Sunday June 10, at noon at St John's Episcopal Church, 101 Chapel St, Portsmouth, NH.  Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome.com . Care for the Dennett family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
